When Kurt Amico describes himself as a farmer, he's not talking about agriculture or cultivation.

"Some people are hunters, looking for you to give something to them. If you're a farmer, you plant a seed and it will grow," says the president and owner of MidCity Office Furniture.

Amico, who joined MidCity as an outside-sales representative in 1991, says he learned early in his career that good things come to those who give in just about every facet of life.

"You could see the way folks acted in their best interest first and that it didn't necessarily work," he says. If you can do what's in someone else's best interest first and you can feel good too, where's the problem there? It's good news all around."

Amico's personal philosophy on community contributions has become a mantra for his business. He says MidCity donated 50 percent of its gross profits last year to charities and community organizations.

Included in those donations were the design and furnishings for an office at Gilda's Club Western New York, 20 truckloads of furniture for the Buffalo City Mission and more furniture for the City of Buffalo and Boys and Girls club of Buffalo, Inc. MidCity has also made cash contributions to such organizations as the Arts Council in Buffalo & Erie County, Camp Good Days and Special Times, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and People, Inc.

"Everybody that asks gets something from us, either in-kind donations or money," Amico says.

And contributions to the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County's annual campaigns are de rigueur for all MidCity staff.

"I look at it like it's a requirement to work here," Amico says.

The Town of Tonawanda resident, a father of two, says he expects that he will have to give something before he sees any benefits, whether in the business world, in relationships with friends and family or in the community.

It seems natural that it would carry over to owning a business and giving back to a community that's obviously made it possible for us to be here," he says.
